sir,

"Alacrity" at Hongkong,

11th. March, 1908.

161

With reference to Your Excellency's letter No. 2658/1907 of the 17th. February, 1908, relative to the care of the Naval Graves in the Happy Valley Cemeteries, I have

the honour to inform you that no communication has reached me

from the Admiralty relative to the maintenance of these Graves

by the Colonial Government, but I assume that it is their

Lordships' intention to bear the expense if the Colonial

Government will undertake their upkeep.

It appears therefore a question as to

whether the Colonial Goverment or the Naval Authorities shall

superintend the work, the funds being provided by the Admiralty.

There is a small sum in the hands of the

2

Chaplain of the "Tamar" the balance of a fund raised some years ago by private subscription, but I am adverse to calling for further private subscriptions from individual Officers, and from Ships' Companies, as I consider that the expense of such

repairs should more properly be borne by the Country in whose

service the Officers and Men have died.

I have etc.,

(Sd.) A. W. Moore,

Admiral.

His Excellency

Sir Frederick D. Lugard, K.O.M.G., C.B.? D.S.0.,

Hongkong.
